  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for kneading

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add sugar, oil, salt, and half of the flour to the yeast mixture. Stir well.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing well to form a dough.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough, divide it into 3 equal parts, and braid them together on a baking sheet.
  7. Let the braided dough rise for another 30 minutes, then bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Allow the challah bread to cool before slicing and serving.
